Roofing Project Dumpster Guide: Everything Memphis Homeowners Need to Know

Robert Brown   July 2025   7 min read

Roofing projects are among the most weight-intensive jobs in residential construction. Asphalt shingles are deceptively heavy — a single square (100 sq ft) of standard 3-tab shingles weighs 150 to 240 pounds. A typical Memphis home's roof might yield 2 to 5 tons of shingle waste alone. Add underlayment, rotted decking, and flashing, and your disposal needs become significant. This guide walks you through everything you need to know about renting the right dumpster for your roofing project.

Why Roofing Dumpsters Are Different

Unlike general renovation debris, roofing waste is extremely dense and heavy. This creates a unique challenge: you may run out of weight capacity long before the dumpster is visually full. Standard dumpster weight limits range from 2 tons (10-yard) to 6 tons (40-yard). For roofing projects, we strongly recommend discussing your specific roof size before booking so we can match you with the right container and set accurate weight expectations.

How Much Shingle Weight Will My Roof Generate?

Use this quick reference to estimate your tear-off weight:

  • Small roof (under 1,500 sq ft): 1.5 – 2.5 tons of shingles
  • Medium roof (1,500–2,500 sq ft): 2.5 – 4 tons of shingles
  • Large roof (2,500–3,500 sq ft): 4 – 6 tons of shingles
  • Very large roof (3,500+ sq ft): 6+ tons — may require two dumpsters or sequential loads

These estimates are for single-layer tear-offs. If your roof has two or three layers of shingles (common in older Memphis homes), multiply accordingly — two-layer roofs can double the weight estimate.

Recommended Dumpster Sizes for Roofing

  • 10-yard dumpster: Very small roofs under 1,000 sq ft, or single squares/patches only
  • 15-yard dumpster: Small homes (1,200–1,800 sq ft), single-layer tear-off
  • 20-yard dumpster: Most Memphis homes (1,800–2,500 sq ft), single layer
  • 30-yard dumpster: Large homes or double-layer tear-offs on medium homes
  • 40-yard dumpster: Very large homes, commercial roofing, or multi-layer tear-offs

Placement Tips for Roofing Dumpsters

Optimal dumpster placement dramatically affects project efficiency for roofing crews:

  • Position close to the roof edge: Shingles thrown directly from the roof into the dumpster saves enormous labor time versus staging debris on the ground first
  • Driveway placement: Most Memphis driveways can accommodate a 20-yard container. Confirm dimensions before delivery if your driveway is narrow
  • Protect driveway surface: Ask us about plywood board protection if you have a newer driveway or decorative concrete — our drivers can position boards under the container
  • HOA considerations: Some Memphis HOAs require permits for contractor equipment on the property during roof work. Check your HOA rules in advance

Roofing Debris: What's Allowed and What's Not

Allowed:

  • Asphalt shingles (all types, any condition)
  • Roofing underlayment and felt paper
  • Rotted or damaged wood decking and sheathing
  • Metal flashing, gutters, and downspouts
  • Ridge caps, starter strips, and hip shingles
  • Roofing nails (scattered throughout debris is fine)

Not Allowed:

  • Asbestos-containing roofing materials (common in homes built before 1980)
  • Solar panels and electrical components
  • HVAC equipment from rooftop units

Does My Roof Have Asbestos Shingles?

If your Memphis home was built before 1980, there is a meaningful chance your roof contains asbestos — either in the shingles themselves or in the felt paper underneath. Before any tear-off begins, have a certified asbestos inspector test a sample. Disturbing asbestos without proper containment is illegal and extremely hazardous. If asbestos is found, a licensed abatement contractor must handle removal before the roofing crew begins work.
